MTV Desi
...That's what MTV World is counting on as it introduces three new channels focusing on the growing population of young, acculturated Asian-Americans: first, MTV Desi, which will go on the air in late July; then MTV Chi, for Chinese-Americans, by the end of the year; and MTV K for Korean-Americans next year. The channels will not be merely tweaked reproductions of MTV India, MTV China or MTV Korea, three of MTV's 42 channels abroad. Rather, they will, like their target audiences, be hybrids, blending here and there and grappling with identity issues, mostly in English. MTV Desi will serve as the prototype. Interspersed among Bollywood videos, electronic tabla music and English-Gujarati hip-hop, it will feature brief documentary clips profiling desis, comic skits about South Asian-American generational conflicts, interviews with bicultural artists and desi house parties, live. MTV Chi will mix up Mandarin rock, Canto pop and Chinese-American rap; MTV K will tap into South Korean hip-hop and the little-known but vibrant Korean-American pop scene. MTV Desi will start on satellite nationally and then move to digital cable systems in various parts of the country....
Also Lem Lopez gets a mention.

So I got back from Bradford late last night (in a car with singing Sonia and a very jetlagged State of Bengal), where I was working at the mela all weekend. Had a midnight dinner on Saturday with Bombay Jesse and our favorite fundamentalist, who gleefully related that he'd been detained at the Bradford/Leeds airport earlier that day, for wearing his ever-present Palestinian headscarf and a t-shirt with Mullah Omar on it. Classy, as usual. ;) And much as I adore the guy, his recent statements to the press about the necessity of the religious hatred bill strike me as a bit disingenuous. He can stand up on stage and declare to huge crowds that my home country is evil and responsible for terrorism (or have me come over to his house, where two of his kids are wearing t-shirts announcing the same in English and Arabic) (at least they got suitably embarassed and silent when he laughed and told them I was American and asked what they thought) but he would then outlaw me for saying the same thing about some of his Muslim brethren? Whatever, dude. Thank goodness speech is free around here.

Speaking of public opinion, Saturday night the "Talvin Singh trio" closed the mela. After a day of Bollywood and bhangra on the main stage, Talvin arrives half an hour late and plays a classical song with a sitar player and saxophonist. The audience of rude bwoys boos him heartily and throws bottles at him. After the song, Talvin stands up and screams "I've never said this on stage before, but FUCK YOU!!!" He angrily sits down and turns on some programmed beats and plays a song that isn't half-bad, but the teens still boo and blow their horns, albeit in a more subdued manner with the arrival of loads of police. After the second song, it's 8:30 and time for the mela to close, so he vanishes quickly and the emcee doesn't say one word about the crowd's behavior! And apparently people complained to Bradford's councillor about Talvin's cussing! It's a city of inbred little trolls as far as I can tell. The younger kids who came to our booth and brazenly rinsed us of every possible free thing on the table while their parents watched all need a good slap. Anyway, I think I've got his outburst on my camera, I'll try to post a clip soon. ;)
NEW (WELL, OLD) SET ALERT

We were doing some moving around at Shiva HQ and I came across two boxes full of my tapes. One of them was one of my earliest recorded sets back in Birmingham in 1998.

Recorded above my parents corner shop using 2 x Gemini PT-1000 decks, a busted Numark mixer and into the mic input of a ghetto blaster, I digitised it and here it is in all it's lo-fi, clanging, glory.

1998 was an exciting year for music, but there was very little on vinyl. I made do with what I had (some admittedly stolen) and this is what happened:

MP3 file (40 odd MB, 112 kpbs VBR)

Tracklisting:

Photek - Ni Ten Ichi Ryu
Photek - Margin 98 (Doc Scott Remix)
Talvin Singh - Butterfly
Osmani Soundz - Spiritual Masterkey
Roni Size - It's Jazzy
Goldie & Roni Size - The Calling
Lelonek - Kizmet
Photek - The Water Margin
Talvin Singh - Sutrix
Ges-e & Usman - Flute Song
Krust - Warhead
Ges-e & Usman - Talking Tablas

Thanks to Sunil for dealing with the upload.

THE INDIAN VISA COINSPIRACY

I sent this and thought I should share

This is a well organized conspiracy by Indian Immigration, Police, Customs and Air India staff with networking at all the Indian International Airports. Be watchful when ever you give your passport to Immigration/Customs/Air India staff. The pass port can be easily tampered and can create trouble to you. They have found easy way of making money from NRIs.

This is the way it works:

At the time of the passenger's departure, if the passenger is not looking at the officer while he is stamping the exit, the officer very cleverly tears away one of the visa pages from the passport. When the passenger leaves the immigration counter, the case is reported on his computer terminal with full details. Now all over India they have got full details of the passenger with Red Flag flashing on the Passport number entered by the departure immigration officer. They have made their money by doing above. On arrival next time, he is interrogated.

Subject to the passenger's period of stay abroad, his income and standing etc., the price to get rid of the problem is settled by the Police and Immigration people. If someone argues, his future is spoiled because there are always some innocent fellows who think the honesty is the basis of getting justice in India.
Ok ok - as far as the set's go, we've hit a bit of a wall. It turns out that we've reached and breached our maximum traffic limit so have to re-think how the sets go up.

I wanted 5 different sets to reflect the various sides to our sound. Looks like we'll have to provide one at a time until we can come up with an alternative way to provide the sets, without genrating a massive bill from our hosts.
